Things to know before apply for job:
M&E consultancy is not “routine engineering work.”
It's a combination of:
-
Designing
-
Planning
-
Coordinating
-
Problem-solving
-
Meeting project timeline
-
Managing expectations
-
Manage projects from concept to completion
It’s a field for those who enjoy thinking, not just doing.
If you prefer hands-on technical work like machinery, automation, maintenance or installation, this role might not suit you. And that’s totally fine — better to know earlier.
But if you like the idea of shaping buildings, systems, solutions,
and being the brain behind the design — you’re in the right place. We welcome you!
Q&A Section: What It’s Really Like Working Here?

1
What's the experience like working under Ir. Ho Chee Wai Guidance?
You’ll be guided directly by Ir. Ho Chee Wai (Ken) — a Professional Engineer who successfully passed the Professional Competency Examination (PCE) on his first attempt in 2022 (and yes, everyone knows how tough to get the PEPC).
Ken strongly believes one thing “Spoon-feeding teaches you nothing.” So yes, he will guide you, but he’ll also push you to think, to ask, and to grow. GENRE is not a happy-go-lucky environment. We emphasize 5 Core Values: Growth • Responsibility • Confidence • One Team • Excellence.
Working with a Professional Engineer means fast learning & high exposure. You will get to see the full picture of a project. Yes, the expectations are high, but the support is also real. Don’t worry, Ken is kind & willing to teach as long as you’re willing to learn and fight together with us. (Believe me! If you read our engineers’ testimonials below, you’ll see it’s exactly as described.)
At GENRE, we doesn't just train engineers to be technically only, we develop entrepreneurial thinkers with exceptional soft skills, ready to lead and solve real-world problems.
2
Ir. Ho has high expectations and want fast delivery, is it true?
Let’s be honest — yes, In M&E consultancy, speed and quality are not preferences, they are survival skills. Projects always come with tight timelines. Clients chase us. And in return, we chase our engineers, not to stress you, but to ensure we deliver what we promise and maintain our professional reputation.
It’s like going to a restaurant. If your food takes too long, what do you do? You walk to another restaurant. Clients think the same way. If Company B can deliver faster with quality, clients will choose Company B. That’s reality, not pressure. So when Ken pushes for timely delivery, it’s not because he is being pushy, it’s because that’s how the real world is running.
Indeed, as a fresh graduate, you will feel hard time to adapt such a hectic stressful environment, however I believe these are the hardships in the journey to be a professional engineer. Here’s the perspective Ir. Ho always shares: “If you don’t go through the hardship now when you’re young, you will meet it later when you’re older & it will feel even harder.”
Don't worry! We will protect our engineers. If it is something that is really unrealistic, we push back.
High expectations ≠ no support.
At GENRE, we always support and back up our engineers. We fight alongside you, you are not alone when you facing difficulty.
However, if you want a cosy, slow, easy job, consultancy is not for you. But if you want to shape yourself into a capable engineer who can stand out, over GENRE is exactly what builds you.
3
What are Ir. Ho’s expectations for engineers?
First, he’s not looking for someone “just looking for a job.” He’s looking for engineers who genuinely have INTEREST and PASSION in consultancy work.
⚠️ Warning:
This is not a “join to try for a while then leave” kind of job. If you come in just to “try try”, you will feel difficult — not because the work is hard, but because you don't have passion in consultancy work. Without real passion, the work will feel difficult and give up easily even with guidance provided.
And that’s okay, everyone has different strengths. If you know you prefer hands-on work involving with machines, automation, maintenance or installation, then this role simply won’t suit you.
What Ir. Ho values most is not perfection or experience.
He values people who:
-
take initiative
-
show responsibility
-
eager to learn
-
can contribute & work as a team
-
want to grow into a strong, independent engineer
If you have that attitude, you’ll do incredibly well here.
4
Many engineers quit this consulting career due to working pressure?
Here’s the part most people forget: Feeling pressure is not a bad thing. It’s actually the beginning of your engineering career. Pressure means you’re learning, improving, and being pushed to think at a higher level.
The key is this:
Don’t quit because there is pressure — use that pressure to push you forward. Giving up should never be the option. Every engineer starts as a “nobody”, but those who persist become “somebody”.
Ir. Ho went through this journey myself:
-
I passed my 1st Tier examination, follow by the 2nd tier PEPC exam on my 1st attempt, within 10 years of my working experiences in M&E consultancy.
-
I didn’t fail, not because I’m special, but because I didn’t quit, I have the passion and I carry the responsibility to uphold public safety.
So my advice is simple:
When you face difficulties, don’t run away or doubt yourself. Don’t quickly say, “Maybe this job is not suitable for me.”
Face it.
Conquer it.
Grow from it.
Pressure is temporary. Skill, confidence, and professionalism stay with you for life.

Any advice to baby engineer?
1) Kill the Problem Before the Problem Kills You
Engineering is all about solving problems. If you can't solve, you voice out, talk to your supervisor. Once discovered the issue, do your best to research and solve the problem within the reasonable timeframe, don't drag too long. If you fail to resolve it alone, get assistance. Problems that are ignored don’t stay small. They snowball, grow bigger, and eventually roll back to hit you even harder.
2) Don’t Just Throw Problems — Give Ideas and Proposals
Good engineers don’t just say, “I can’t do it.” Before asking for help, think:
-
What resources can I use?
(online references, standards, books, drawings, guidelines, etc.) -
What solutions or options can I propose?
-
What have I tried so far?
Then talk to your supervisor. But 1st you need to have done some research and propose few ideas of solution to bring out during the discussion. Your supervisor can guide you, but you must take the first step. Stopping at the conclusion of “I don't know how to do” and waiting for an answer is not real engineering.
3) Learn From Your Mistakes
Everyone makes mistakes — nobody is perfect. But as engineers, we must understand the impact of our mistakes:
-
Some mistakes damage the company’s professional image
-
Some mistakes cause project to delay
-
Some mistakes cause additional cost
-
Some mistakes, in the worst case, can endanger lives
Don't give way to mistake due to pressure or any other factors. Keep in mind that as an engineer, we are holding huge responsibility to public safety.
Do the first thing right. Do your best to avoid mistakes. But if a mistake happens, own it, correct it, and learn from it. If you learn from every mistake, the frequency and severity of your mistakes will naturally reduce over time. That’s how real engineers grow.
4) Be Responsible & Deliver Beyond Expectations
Engineers solve problems, not find excuses, not point fingers, not push responsibility away.
Bring value, be helpful, and show ownership in every project you touch.
If you consistently:
-
take responsibility
-
solve problems
-
support your team
-
and deliver with integrity
You won’t just grow — you’ll stand out.
